The main purpose of our advocacy programme is to communicate the plight of victims, survivors and those at risk of abuse to policy makers so that they in turn can develop policies that protect those that need it most. You too can help us influence policy. Join us, be an advocate for change
Advocate 4 Change
Are you deeply concerned and passionate about issues of family violence? Advocating for change is a way of raising awareness about family violence, mobilising people and getting them informed about family violence and how it affects lives. It is also a way of getting the attention of policy makers and ultimately getting them to develop or change policies about family violence.
Contact Politicians and Lobby for Change
Family violence affects people from all walks of life regardless of socio-economic class, ethnicity, culture, or gender. One way to get laws developed and/or changed around family violence in others to protect victims and survivors is to get the attention of policy makers. Write letters, send emails, use the arts or make phone calls to your local representatives and politicians.
In order to get people interested, they must feel included so public interest must be emphasized when advocating and lobbying. If people do not feel they are being represented, then they might not give attention to the issue.
Meet with Legislators, Politicians and/or Public Representatives
Meeting politicians or public representative and/or their staff is also vital in making change happen. Make sure you are very well prepared. You can also send them a letter to meet with them, attend their public meetings or invite them to visit the organization you are working with.
Don’t forget politicians and public representatives are extremely busy people so if you are meeting up with them prepare yourself properly and keep your message short and clear. Don’t forget to dress appropriately.
